Petition to Exempt Peabody Police and Fire Chiefs Becomes Law

(Boston) Today Representative Theodore Speliotis, Representative Leah Cole, and Senator Joan Lovely announced that the petition, filed by Representative Cole and co-sponsored by Representative Speliotis and Senator Lovely, was in response to a vote by the Peabody City Council in favor of making the change.

“I am confident that this legislation provides the Mayor with the opportunity to selec a person who he and the men and women of the police and fire departments can work well with,” said Representative Ted Speliotis (D-Danvers).

Representative Cole (R-Peabody) commented, “I am glad that the Governor has signed the petition into law. This was one of the first items that passed my office as a new State Representative and I was excited to take the lead. I would also like to thank Representative Speliotis and Senator Lovely for co-sponsoring this petition. It’s always great when we can come together to help the city of Peabody.”

“I gave the measure my full support and it passed the Senate in only nine days,” said Senator Lovely. She added, “This was a clear priority for the city of Peabody, so I’m glad that the Legislature approved this request in a timely manner.”

The petition, passed as a session law, was adopted on July 3rd. It is known as Chapter 33 of the Acts of 2013, “An Act Exempting the positions of police chief and fire chief in the city of Peabody from the civil service law.” It enables the Mayor of Peabody to selec the police chief and fire chief outside of the civil service system.
