Local Road Repair Funding Authorized

(Boston) – Today, Governor Charlie Baker signed H.4133, “An Act financing improvements to certain municipal roads” into law. Senator Joan Lovely announced that the $200 million bill financing local road repairs through the Chapter 90 program provides over $4.35 million to communities in the Second Essex district. The House and Senate unanimously enacted the legislation on Wednesday.

“I’m sure every North Shore driver could point to a few roads on their commute or in their neighborhood that could use some work,” said Senator Lovely. “This funding will enable cities and towns to make those necessary repairs sooner rather than later.”

Communities within the Second Essex district are expected to receive the following apportionments:

-Beverly: $1,054,568

-Danvers: $914,566

-Peabody: $1,255,702

-Salem: $855,944

-Topsfield: $271,591

The Chapter 90 program was enacted in 1973 and allows municipalities to be reimbursed for local transportation improvement projects. According to the Department of Transportation (MassDOT), funding is calculated using a weighted average of a city or town’s population, employment, and total mileage of roads.
