Legislature Passes Sales Tax Holiday Bill

(Boston) The Massachusetts Legislature today approved a bill to create a sales tax holiday on August 10th and 11th, marking the eighth year the Commonwealth will provide a two-day sales tax exemption. The legislation is designed to increase sales for local businesses and provide relief to consumers, particularly as families prepare for a new school year.

“I’m hoping that this tax holiday will give a late summer boost to our local businesses,” said Senator Joan Lovely, who fully supported the initiative. “It’s always helpful to lift the sales tax and give consumers a good opportunity to make some significant purchases and save money.”

“The sales tax holiday is always a great way to promote economic activity for both buyers and sellers,” said Representative John Keenan (D—Salem). “I am happy to join my colleagues in the Legislature to once again capitalize on this opportunity to invest in our local businesses and provide some reprieve for our taxpayers.”

“I know this break in the sales tax spurs many businesses to offer additional discounts that make it even more attractive for consumers,” said Representative Ted Speliotis (D-Danvers).

As in previous years, the sales tax holiday will apply to purchases under $2,500. It excludes vehicles, motorized boats, tobacco, meals and utilities.

The bill now goes to the Governor for his signature.
